My first bird of 2012 was a Pileated Woodpecker, heard at 07:30 as I was waking up. Sleeping in is easier in winter, as it's dark so much of the time.

I had a pair of Pileateds together at a suet feeder yesterday. I see them a couple times each day if I'm paying attention, and they always add pizzazz to the yard.

Pileated Woodpeckers are actually increasing in most parts of North America, very likely (in my opinion) because they are adapting to urban environments. Go to the WOS meeting in Seattle Monday night to find out more.
