Tweeters,

We began at dawn on the 29th at Julia Butler with Swamp Sparrow being my
target bird. I suspected dawn was too early for a good crack at the sparrow
so we enjoyed the refuge and its beautiful setting and all the birds. We
ended up with 65 species. We did find a SWAMP SPARROW (1.5 miles west from
heaquarters at a slough) as well a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK from this spot.
Eurasian Wigeon is expected here; we observed two males.

Spending fully half of the day here, we tallied a nice variety of birds
including: 15 species of waterfowl (2500 Cackling Geese being especially
conspicuous), seven diurnal raptors (Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier,
Red-tailed , Rough-legged, and Red-shouldered Hawks, American Kestrel and
Peregrine Falcon), Great Horned Owl, three woodpeckers (Red-breasted
Sapsucker, Downy Woodpecker, and Northern Flicker), four corvids (Steller's
Jay, Western Scrub-Jay, American Crow, and Common Raven), and seven
sparrows: Fox, Song, Lincoln's, Swamp, Golden-crowned, and Spotted Towhee
and Dark-eyed Junco.
