I've had some good luck in previous years with owling before dawn on Jan 1 to get some owl as my #1 yr bird - Snowy Owl one year, Western Screech another, Short-eared last year. This year, alas, the owls weren't popping out in Richland -- American Robin was my first of the year for 2012.
