Hi Marty and Joe,

I was at Ocean Shores yesterday. See Carol Riddell's excellent post from yesterday concerning the location of the Emperor and G. White-fronted Geese on the golf course as well as other good sightings. In addition to the birds Carol mentioned, I did have a good look at the KING EIDER female at the base of Damon Point (to the right if one is facing the spit). When I first arrived, there was a mixed flock of SURF and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS pretty close to shore. I scanned the raft 5 times and was about to give up when suddenly there she was on the left side of the group. I watched her for a while (she was very actively feeding), then began to scope out other birds farther off shore. When I looked back, she was gone.

If you walk out to Damon Point, stay on the right side. After less than half a mile, you'll begin to see the SNOWY OWLS in the grassy region, usually hanging out on drift wood. I did have 1 juvenile land on the tip of a dead tree that was maybe 3" in diameter and less than 30' from where I was walking. He looked very goofy up there. I also did some bush whacking and managed to see 1 HORNED LARK in the grassy portion.

Accessing the Game Range near the sewage treatment pond where you walk to the bay passed the tower, all 3 scoter species were present including a nice fairly close male BLACK SCOTER. Finally, there was a striking male EURASIAN WIGEON hanging out with a flock of AMERICAN WIGEONS on the golf course near the library. I didn't see any alcids.

I have never spent the night at Ocean Shores. I'm certain that others out there in Tweeterdom could give you good advice.

The BLACK PHOEBE that has been reported in Lacey at the Hogum Bay water retention ponds was present this morning. I did not look at the time, but it was probably between 10:15-10:30. I watched it with 4 fellow birders while it was flycatching and vocalizing at the far side of the first pond. After just a few minutes, it flew to the parking area and landed in 1 of the Douglas Firs, flew to an adjacent tree, then flew away over the parking lot and was soon gone from view.

Good birding,

Lonnie Somer

I'm a birder from the East who recently retired to the San Juan Islands. I'm planning trip down to Ocean Shores on Tuesday with the aim of seeing the Emperor and Greater White Fronted Geese (as well as Snowy Owls and alcids). Has anyone seen these birds there (or anywhere else in WA or BC) recently? Advice on where to stay in Ocean Shores would also be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Joe Massey
