Driving south on US 97 somewhere between milepost 220 and 225 (north of
Orondo) I and one other in my vehicle saw a Pileated Woodpecker fly from the
side of a power pole toward the orchard on the Columbia River side of the
highway. I did not realize what a unique sighting this was for Douglas
County until I tried to enter it on my Douglas County checklist.
