Jan Bragg and I spent a few hours this afternoon at the winter
wonderland of Magnuson Park. With snow and ice blanketing the ground, it
was interesting to see the changes in foraging behavior of some of the
birds: Golden-crowned Sparrows hopping up from the ground for grass
seeds over their heads, Green-winged Teal breaking channels in the
surface slush layer to get to the pond edge, and a trio of Wilson's
Snipe foraging in the slush over by the tennis courts. Here is a video

Huge numbers of Greater and Lesser Scaup and American Wigeon (plus a
Eurasian) at the lake; a Bald Eagle made a couple of passes which sent
all the birds into flight. We saw an American Pipit in the wetlands;
once when the pipit flew up, a Red-tailed Hawk gave chase for a moment.
California Quail were traipsing around in the wetlands and a Western
Meadowlark was seen there as well. 4 Horned and a single Pied-billed
Grebe were near the duck hordes.
