I went down to the Pt. Defiance Boathouse this afternoon just in time to see a fisherman catch a Western Grebe. He was using a two hook mooching rig and small herring as bait. One hook was in the birds beak through the nostril, the other stuch in its back between the wings. Th eguy didn't have a towel to wrap the bird as what usually happens so he grabbed it on its head. After removing the hooks he threw it up in the air thinking the Grebe would fly but it went staight down plopping in the water. The Grebe swam? that.
