I finally got down to Panther Lake in Federal Way yesterday to see the damage the ice storm inflicted. I saw trees downed like match sticks on the trails, where the trees didn't have other trees to support them. While I was walking away from the area near sunset, I heard an owl hooting on the north end of the lake. Guessing it was a Great Horned Owl I whipped out my BlackBerry (forgive the technology). I called, up "owl calls". I was able to compare what I was hearing with the recordings and determined I was hearing a female, horned owl. She repeated the call several times while I listened. I just wish she would let me photograph her. I wish others better luck.
