hi all ... Gene and I went back to Steigerwald Refuge today and
walked around ... had 30 species including four new ones for me for
the Refuge, bringing our Refuge list total to 81 birds ... today we
added Horned Larks (in 2 locations, 2 at the parking and a small
flock near the dike), Common Raven (at the dike), Common Goldeneye
(young male, flew into one of those small canals leading to the
lake), and Mourning Dove (at the parking lot) ...

we looked at the logging along the dike and were pleasantly surprised
that it wasn't near as bad as I imagined ... I was picturing the land
stripped all the way down to the Columbia ... and, while it was sad
they're logging, at least something is left ...

Bald Eagle ... (one, adult)
Black-capped Chickadee ... (one)
Bufflehead ... (quite a few)

Canada Geese ... (small flocks)
Common Goldeneye ... (one, young male)
Common Raven ... (one, flying dike line)
Double-crested Cormorant ... (one, on Columbia)
Downy Woodpecker ... (one)
Gadwall ... (quite a few)
Golden-crowned Sparrow ... (one)
Gull ... (1, unknown species, flying over Columbia)
Great Blue Heron ... (quite a few)
Hooded Merganser ... (pair on Gibbons Creek)
Horned Lark ... (pair near parking, flock near dike)
Mallard ... (lots)
Mourning Dove ... (one, parking lot)
Northern Flicker ... (2, usual place in trees)
Northern Harrier ... (1 female and 2 males)
Northern Pintail ... (suprisingly only saw one pair)
Northern Shoveler ... (lots)
Pied-billed Grebe ... (one, on Gibbons Creek)
Red-tailed Hawk ... (one, in trees on dike)
Red-winged Blackbird ... (saw one, heard more)
Ring-necked Duck ... (quite a few)
Song Sparrow ... (quite a few)
