We spent the nights of June 29 and June 30 at the Pine Flat Campground on
the Mad River in the Wenatchee National Forest. Both nights we heard a
Northern Saw-whet owl from the campground; I tried to call it in closer but
no luck. Hiking up the Mad River Trail, we saw lots of wild flowers,
butterflies, and Western Bluebirds. This area was severely burned about
20-years ago in the Tyee Fire, but there are still lots of standing burnt
out snags which is great for the cavity nesters.



The Mad River Trail is very narrow, about 18" wide in most places with steep
drops down to the Mad River; yet the USFS allows dirt bikes, horses,
mountain bikes, and hikers all to use this trail simultaneously which is
insane. We also saw several rattlesnakes on the trail.



The Pine Flat Campground is now closed for construction to widen the
campground road for trailers and construct a new restroom. Likely this
campground will be closed the rest of the summer and there will be no
parking in the vicinity of the Mad River Trail.



Driving back way from the Mad River to Leavenworth, we saw a MacGillivray's
Warbler, about 4 miles up from the end of the paved Eagle Creek Road.
