I just got back from a quick trip over to Tonasket to see the Painted
Bunting with my family on Saturday afternoon. The bird was easily found in
the trees on the downhill side of the road as it crosses Siwash Creek. We
watched the bird from about 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. It was actively moving from
tree to tree, perching conspicuously near the tops of the trees. At one
point the Painted Bunting appeared to be chasing a Lazuli Bunting, and
sometimes the bird moved out of view, although we could hear it singing
fairly consistently from farther into the stand of trees. My camera I use
for digiscoping is not working, but I got a few poor photos using my son's
camera. We all got good views, though, and even my seven-year-old felt the
long trip was worth it to see this great bird. Thanks to Jeanelle, Jim and
