This morning we experienced a new type of success at attracting a Pileated Woodpecker to our yard. Up to now, we have seen PWs working on dead trees and stumps that we have not removed. Several years ago I had a live Spruce taken out that I had planted about 20 years prior. The Spruce was endangering the power lines leading to the house. We lose power often enough without my contributing to the problem. I had the tree guy leave about 20 feet of trunk. He scarred the top so it looked like the tree top had been taken out by a wind storm. We had seen almost no evidence of bird activity on the trunk. Then in the last few months we have seen evidence that a woodpecker was at work. Well, this morning while going to get the newspaper, my wife saw a Pileated Woodpecker on the Spruce trunk. Maybe the Seattle Times could use this in an ad as another reason to subscribe to their paper! The PW was quite skillful at staying on the side of the trunk opposite from my wife, but she still managed to see it.
