Yesterday while birding in Fall City, I found what I am quite sure was a nesting pair of Veerys. My first impression was that they were very red for Swainson's Thrushes, and the wash of light golden color on the upper breast stood out. Studying them for a few moments I could not see a face pattern and the stomach was plain white. My wife however, who has a self-appointed role of keeping me honest, pointed out that according to Sibley's Field Guide to Birds of Western North America, Veerys are not located in Western Washington. They were found as follows: Going east from Fall City on SR 202, I turned right on SE Fish Hatchery Road and parked at the first large parking area on the right that is posted for the Discover Pass (beside the Snoqualmie River). At the further end of the parking area is a fisherman's path behind a concrete barrier block, they were located about 30 yards down that path. They apparently had a nest close to the path as one was carrying a beakful of insects when I first noticed it and they were quite agitated by my presence. Is this unusual to find them nesting on the west side?
