Tweeters,

It?s hard to keep up with all the bird field guides that come out at frequent intervals and I confess I have not done so. However, I recently obtained the NatGeo 6th edition and have quickly fallen in love with this rework of an already incredible book. I am especially impressed by the all-new maps. Older editions didnot cover migration patterns. In this new edition, not only are migratory patterns detailed but, where different, spring and fall patterns are depicted. Take for example Hudsonian Godwit and various warblers such as Cerulean and Blackpoll, the pattern of these species in spring differs from their fall routes. Trans-Gulf migrants are depicted, too, so it?s clear which species employ the ?Yucatan to High Island ? night flight versus the circum-Gulf migrants and the Caribbean to Florida route. Many subspecies, for example Fox and White-crowned Sparrows, also, are mapped in detail.

I also am admiring much of the new artwork, most of which is a great improvements on the older editions.

Finally, I see the guide is thoroughly continent-wide in scope and EVERY North American species is covered.

The text is superbly crafted, too. I have enjoyed reading details on the subtle marks separating difficult species.

I really believe a hearty congratulations is in order to all who contributed to this 6th edition.
