Around noon I saw a lone Bonaparte's gull in mating plumage (black head) swimming in the Sound below Sunset Ave.?? The?tide had come in and?the gull?was fairly close to the shore.? My local bird book says the fall migrants can return as early as late July, so I am guessing it was an advance scout for the flock.
?
Later?I photographed?this year's nemesis bird, the Virgina rail, at the marsh.?? The water in the marsh was very high due to the high tide, which I believe forced the rail closer to the walkway.??I also photograhed a Caspian?tern landing in the water in the marsh, a first for me. ?
