hi

stopped by the falls around 11:30. wet and misty. the views through the
mists revealed only two birds on the scrape. looked around some and
spotted the tiercel up on the big snag tree, but no hint of mom and the two
kids. focused back in on the scrape and saw three birds flapping and
cavorting. as i wondered how defective my elderly eyesight must be
getting, the fourth bird chandelled into the nest. he actually swooped up
from below, just clearing the lip as his elders do when they arrive. took
him a couple steps to come to a full and complete stop, but he did it
nonetheless. since the birds are too big to miss, i can only conclude two
of the youngsters are flying, and doing so in and out of the nest. that's
a first in my experience. in the past, one bird returned to the scrape
after a couple days away (two years ago as i recall it) but after his
sisters greeted him and then started mugging him for food, he left and had
nothing more to do with them for the rest of the season. hung out with dad
in self defense.

too bad the weather has been so crummy. it promises to be very interesting
watching this crew come of age . . ..
