I missed the original post, and this may or may not be relevant, but it does
put quail "on campus" at least 43 years ago. In 1968 or 69 I applied for a
job with UW Fisheries (they had diverse interests then) "observing" and
"caring for" quail. As I remember, the pens were on the south side of
campus, across from the Med Center, just above where the BG trail now
passes. It would not be unreasonable to assume there were escapees.

Ultimately, I was offered a position working in the vivarium, which I
declined.

There have been California quail at Magnuson Park for years and they have
successfully nested there. There have been years without sightings and just
when everyone thinks they're gone they pop up again.

I have worked on the east slope of the main campus for thirty years.
During the '80s and 90s I repeated saw California Quail typically in a
family group of about half a dozen birds.
These sightings occurred below the dorms and above Pend Oreille.
I have not seen them for about the past decade (but that does not mean they
are not here).
The Montlake Fill is about 1000 yards south east from my location.

So I would not be surprised by California Quail at the Fill.
