Today I kept my ears open during the tail end of a Discovery Park walk hoping to detect a Common Nighthawk. Success! At 8:30pm there was a Common Nighthawk flying quickly down the trail surrounding the playground area. It was flying pretty fast, and I could never quite get a good view of it in the open although I was running to get into the open. The bird was calling repeatedly with its distinctive peeeew as it flew away over the maintenance headquarters by the playground. Earlier in the day, a Barred Owl juvenile (making a hissing sound) and mother (making an ascending nasally whistle) were seen in the woods northwest of the playground south of the very long staircase.
