Great questions, I've been wondering about this too.

Isn't there a size difference between the two? I sure notice some crows are
a lot smaller than others.

Seems to me there was a Tweeters discussion re this a few years back, w/some
folks saying they're all American Crows and that the NW Crow is only a
subspecies of American.

Behavior is a big clue. If the crow is beachcombing it's a Northwestern.
If it's dumbster diving, its an American. If it does both, it's a hybrid.
