On Fathers Day I received what may be a real treasure, a small (3"X 5") cloth bound book entitled "A First Book upon the Birds of Oregon and Washington," published in 1902, author Wm. Rogers Lord. I'm interested in finding out about the author and the potential value of the book.

Along with personal anecdotes, he writes about each bird specie in much the same format as current field guides. Comparing his comments with current guide books is fascinating reading.

He uses many current names. Among the "unusual' species covered:

Oregon Towhee or Chewink
Willow Goldfinch
Northwestern Vigors's Wren
Oregon Bay-Winged Bunting
Lutescent Warbler
Long-Tailed Chat
Pileoted Warbler
Russet-Backed Thrush
Traill's Flycatcher
Arkansas Kingbird
California Cuckoo
Harris's Woodpecker
Gairdner's Woodpecker
Desert Sparrow Hawk
Kennicott's Screech Owl
Red-Backed Sandpiper
Short-Billed Gull
Townsend's Sparrow
Slender-Billed Nuthatch

Any information about this book or its author would be much appreciated.
