It's not just swallows that react to changing neighborhood habitat. There's an area here in the Happy Valley neighborhood in (south) Bellingham that has changed, regarding species present. Years ago, one could usually see a few Red-winged Blackbirds staking out a couple of territories. But the brush has taken over former cattails in that corner. Another storn run-off pond that had cattails had an early morning btitern sounding like some kind of pump (I noted it for my records). That pond now has changed to a willow(or etc) thicket.
