I stumbled across an apparent first for Island Co., a LEAST FLYCATCHER, just
after noon today. The bird was calling almost incessantly during the 45
min. I listened to it and tried to observe it. It remained fairly high in a
couple of trees and I had several brief views of the bird as well.



Location:

This is on the Southwest end of Camano Island. My GPS gave me a street
address of 3379 S. Camano Dr. Driving south, if you see a mailbox that has
a "3406" on the side of it, you have gone about 100 feet too far. Look for
a dirt track on the east side of the road to turn into. I parked there and
you'll see a thick heavy cable with orange ribbon hanging across the path.
I assume that this area is what will become a new housing development but
currently it has tracks that crisscross through it from heavy machinery. It
is mostly clearcut with stumps and vegetation throughout. There are some
selectively un-felled trees throughout. I walked past the cable about
1/10th of a mile at which point I heard the bird calling from further to the
S. or SE. In that first tenth mile you'll also pass a couple houses that
are mostly obscured and several hundred yards off to your left (north).
When you get to a point that you can take a track to the S or SE, do it and
it will lead you about another tenth mile down a steep stretch into a ravine
area. This is where the bird was calling from. Total distance from your
car less than 1/5th mile. Beware that it was a bit muddy and uneven ground
and if you get out of the heavy equipment tracks at all, you'll be over and
under logs, stumps, vegetation etc.
