Friends from San Diego (in their mid-forties) are visiting me this week
and took a walk here in Cinebar this evening about 7 pm. They surprised
a woodpecker sitting on a tree about 6 feet from them. They came back
full of excitement because the bird was so much bigger than any
woodpecker either of them had ever seen. They described it as a mostly
black and white woodpecker with a red crest and a long bill. When they
browsed through my Sibley separately, both of them identified the bird
as a Pileated Woodpecker.

I said, no, impossible--not here--but they were so sure that I thought I
would ask whether anyone else in this part of Lewis County has seen the
bird.
