I've been monitoring the Great Blue Herons at UW. Here's the chronology, as
I have observed:



2008: 4 nests

2009: 8 nests (2 of which failed over Triangle Parking Garage across from UW
Hospital)

2010: 15

2011: 33

2012: 41



There has been some eagle predation, but each year there have been nests
that have successfully fledged young. It's doing very well this year as of a
week ago. I report productivity data to the WDFW for their Priority Habitat
Species database each year.

A non-birder friend called me all excited to tell me he discovered nesting
great blue herons on the UW campus. I assume that many people are aware of
the heron rookery on the UW campus. Does anyone know about this group such
as how long it has been there? He really would like to know more. Has it
been successful in past years and what are the main predators?
