This is a good lesson for all of us that it's best to leave nature alone as much as you can. One thing to know is that a common pesticide for tent caterpillars is Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis, a bacterium). It's touted as "safe," but that means safe for humans and most other critters. But it also kills other caterpillars, as it is effective against all Lepidoptera. You don't really want to get rid of your tiger swallowtails, do you?

One correction: I believe the parasite that lays the white egg on the caterpillar is a tachinid fly. There are plenty of parasitic wasps, but tachinid flies (look something like large house flies, very hairy, many species) are also major parasites on the larvae of other insects.
