Haupt is a Pacific Northwest naturalist/writer, who's written two books that
I highly recommend. RARE ENCOUNTERS WITH ORDINARY BIRDS has fascinating
information on some common birds of the Pacific Northwest. Her book CROW
PLANET is about much more than crows -- it is a naturalist's perspective on
our relationship to wildlife and its relationship to us.

Saturday, March 3 (that's today!), Black Hills Audubon Society celebrates
its Annual Dinner at the Olympia Center in downtown Olympia. Doors open at
5:00 pm, potluck dinner at 5:30, with a terrific silent auction. Don't know
if tickets ($10) are still available--they generally sell out -- but it's a
great event. The keynote speakers this year are Daniel and Ginger
Poleschook, whose topic is "Washington's Not-So-Common Loon."
