I noticed a couple of Tweeters posts, in February, that mentioned Osprey observed in Oregon. Long ago, when I participated in annual early April aerial surveys of Bald Eagle nests, mainly in the 1980s, Osprey were occasionally, but rarely, at their nests along the routes we followed. I was under the impression that birds were just beginning to show up in the first two weeks of April. More recently, I became interested in the timing of the earliest arrivals at nest sites and did some searching of Tweeters archives. I concluded that anything prior to the very last few days of March was extremely unusual. To me, an Osprey on its nesting territory in Washington during the first week of March seems very unusual.

We have a nest in our ravine on Taylor Creek near the south side of Eagle Harbor which has been successfully used by ospreys for at least the last 5 years or so. We saw our first osprey of the season on Monday 3/5, perched atop a snag they use as a viewpoint. I think this s the earliest we've seen osprey returning. Anyone else see ospreys yet? When do they usually show up in Puget Sound?
