Marc Hoffman asked about where to report a banded Cooper's Hawk. Various
people steered him (correctly) to three different places to report the
sighting.

A simple place to go to find where/how to report banded birds is the
Washington Ornithological Society (WOS) Web site: http://wos.org

There, you can click on the "Banded Bird Reports" link on the right side
of the Home Page. It will take you directly to the federal Bird Banding
Laboratory page, which will give you detailed information on reporting
banded birds.

But you should also click on the "Research" link on the right side of
the WOS Home Page. It links to a page describing research projects under
way around the state and region. The description in some cases includes
the color and arrangement of the bands on the birds in the study. The
page also gives contact information for the researchers, including Jack
Bettesworth, who has a long-standing study going on accipters and merlins.

All you have to remember is: wos.org!

(And while on the WOS Web site, you can also join WOS, download
printable state checklists, sign up for a field trip, search 24 years of
Washington Field Reports, see a gallery of bird photos, or read issues
of WOS' Washington Birds scholarly journal! We have Treesa Hertzel to
thank for our wonderful Web site.)
