This year I thought the Population Bomb had hit the Anchor Pub - well actually it was a near miss and struck the tall Big-leaf Maple out back by the railroad tracks. Or did it?

In 2010 we got new bird neighbors at the Anchor when a pair of Crows built a nest up in the maple. It was interesting watching their family antics all summer. This winter, after leaf-fall, I noticed a second nest up there in the bare tree, only about 12' from the first. " population explosion!" I thought, but then got to thinking that maybe it was a decoy nest. I don't know much about Crow nesting so I googled 'american crow nesting habits' - that's when the story got more interesting.

That's because the first hit was 'Crow Busters' a site devoted to the doing in of Crows. I't a Crow hunters site that seems to have really achived subculture levels .I'm alway amazed by the creativity of my fellow humans. 'Crow Blaster's' might be an alternative name. I can't wait to get my hand's on a magazine called 'Varmint Master's' ! These folks do seem to be on a real mission to damp down them black hordes. Seems a way bit overboard. A little short on respect. Whatever.

At least they promote eating the birds, and do have Crow recipes. All I can say to them Collard Doves is "look out!" before somebody invents "Dove Busters".

Of course Humans are real achiever's in the overpopulation department themselves. I was thinking about a road trip I took from Seattle to Michigan back in 1978. It seemed like there was a lot less traffic back then. More camping spots. I even look back at clear-cuts with nostalgia now since they are preferable to cul-de-sac developments we now have sprouting all over. Since 1978 the U.S population has gone up about 100 million, by a third. Yep, lots of people - Boom!
