Herter's, a mail-order outdoor and hunting supply outfit, sought to bolster
its sales during the off-season (i.e, non-game hunting season) by inciting
its catalog readers to launch havoc on "Killer Crow". The tone of the
ranting denunciations really went beyond sanity. Herter invoked images of
Killer Crow murdering ducklings and young game birds to motivate his readers
to take on the sacred mission of freeing our country of a horrifying demise.
One wonders what Herter said about Commies.

guns and ammo, crow calls, crow decoys, crow camouflage, crow bait, owl
decoys and a hundred other anti-crow items which I have long forgotten.



My roommate, two companions and I went on a long canoe trip in Manitoba one
summer and stopped off to visit the then-mayor of Turtle River Falls, in
northern Minnesota, one Irv Harper. One of our guys knew him; I think Irv
was a college dropout (like I was soon to become).



Irv liked crows. Cheap, readily available, fresh and plump, Irv liked to
bake them in pies, if I recall correctly. We did not, however, ask for the
recipe.
