Subject: [Tweeters] Red Crossbill moment, with a side of siskins

I had a lovely surprise on getting up this morning - a new yard bird, in the
shape of a beautiful male red crossbill at my feeders with the siskins. It
was by far the closest view I've ever had of one, since my typical view is a
shape scoped at the top of a distant tree. About three seconds later, the
cat jumped up on the windowsill, and the crossbill departed, so no photo
opportunities for me. Ah well.

Speaking of the siskins, I've had the same feeders up for years, including
mixed seed feeders and a thistle sock, which the siskins have always
thronged. This year, a number of them have started on the suet feeder as
well, to the disgust of the chickadees and nuthatches. I wouldn't have
imagined siskins as suet fans, although there is seed mixed into the suet.
How common are siskins at suet feeders?
