Hi Tweets,

My travels allowed me to swing by Birders Corner late this morning
(3-21-12), which is at the intersection of Dodson and Frenchman Hills
Roads, north of Royal City. I haven't been there in a few years and, as is
inevitable, things change. The windrow of large trees on the east side of
Dodson Road, just south of the intersection, that protected the orchard
have been cut down. Looks like a recent logging operation. The habitat
about a mile north of Birders Corner that used to be productive for Great
Horned Owl has lost some of the trees that provided roosting in the past.

It seems to be a bit early still for the migratory abundance that is
Birders Corner. There was an absence of waders and shorebirds today, except
for one Killdeer. There were 21 TUNDRA SWANS, 52 CANVASBACKS (evenly mixed
between drakes and hens), NORTHERN PINTAILS, MALLARDS, GREEN-WINGED TEALS,
AMERICAN WIGEONS, GADWALLS, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and the usual
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and HOUSE FINCHES.

Heading a mile or so north on Dodson Road there were 102 SANDHILL CRANES in
a field to the west, perhaps getting ready for the festival by the same
name!. Other than that, there were RED-TAILED HAWKS, RAVENS, MEADOWLARKS,
and SAY'S PHOEBE between there and I-90.
