a small piece of 1/4" plywood

This will always be the most expeditious/simple solution without going to the hardware store and handing over money you don't need to spend.

We're not talking rocket surgery here!

assuming the entry holes are round, many hardware stores sell black rubber plugs in various diameters. you may be able to buy rubber plugs & just stick them in for the winter.
