Tweeters: The main historic source on reports of Black-capped Chickadee in San Juan County is Lewis' and Sharpe's book, Birding in the San Juans. If memory serves nearly all of the BC Chickadee entries were from the three largest islands. Seems this makes sense given the larger tracts of deciduous and suburban habitat. I recall encountering a single singing bird on a late-winter/early spring visit in (?) 1976 near Port Stanley, n.e. section of Lopez I. I think Dennis has very valid observations on the increasing trend for the species.At least in the Sequim area, for example, we have had increasing CBC numbers (and 'ol Bob could chime in here, but I believe we set a record for the 2011 CBC). Downy Woodpecker seems to have a similar trend locally. Both species seem OKwith increased suburbia and deciduous/scrub situations. The paucity of BC Chickadee in San Juan Co is similar to the range and distribution of Steller's Jay there. That said, Steller's is easier to find, at least locally, on Orcas I.
