Last week during the Wednesday morning walk at Nisqually NWR led by Phil
Kelley, we observed Mew Gulls paddling on the surface of the water while
feeding. Admittedly we were walking the Estuary Boardwalk Trail with a
strong 15-20 mile per hour wind from south making white caps along the
McAllister Creek, but from the boardwalk we had terrific views watching
several Mew Gulls paddle their feet on the surface of the water to help
maintain their position while feeding. I felt like I was on a pelagic
trip! Ah, spring in Washington. Dennis Paulson taught us that Mew Gulls
will feed like Storm Petrels in the Master Birder Program, and it was tons
of fun to see the behavior in action.
