A great birding site is Cabrillo National Monument, located on Point Loma.
Good for migrants (it?s a main stop on the Pacific Flyway), and many
shorebirds. When I worked there, I recall the bird list was around 400. On
your drive up to the park scan the neighborhood for parrots ? there?s quite
a colony in the Point Loma neighborhood. Check www.nps.gov, then pick
Cabrillo from the list that comes up for directions on how to get there.
