The Black-backed Woodpecker (BBWO) is a state candidate for listing according to the WDFW web site. I have not seen any reports or studies done to estimate populations of BBWO in Washington. However, something does need to be done to curtail salvage logging in this state and throughout the western U.S. Even the Forest Practice rules for WA are less restrictive when it comes to salvaging timber from fire or insect kill compared to normal timber harvests. This will be just another species that could have been managed correctly, but where landowners will now face more regulations if the species does get listed resulting in more anger and resentment, aka, another Spotted Owl.
