Today I saw a Merlin in flight over the West Rocky Prairie Wildlife Area mounded prairie,
and swoop up the a perch in a Douglas-fir tree on the edge of a woodland. Later in the
day, in conversation with someone else who works here, learned that she too had seen a
Merlin here within the past week, also over the prairie.

I occasionally see Merlin in Thurston County, but most always during the winter. (When I
used to go to Nisqually Delta, I saw them there with some frequency.) Does anyone have
any comments about their commonality (or not) outside of winter in the Puget Trough
lowlands in general, and more particularly the Thurston County prairies?
