Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report

A possible WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was reported May 9 among the swarm of
shorebirds along Wireless Road in Astoria. A May 6 offshore boat trip out of
Newport found a YELLOW-BILLED LOON at 3.5 miles and a HORNED PUFFIN 28
miles farther out. ON May 8 a BROAD-WINGED HAWK was at Flores Lake. On May 9
a GREAT-TAIED GRACKLE was seen in Burns.

Migrations were very heavy during the week with a surge of CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD reports from the Willamette Valley. Several SWAINSON?S THRUSHES
were seen and heard in the Willamette Valley during the week.

On May 7 a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was at the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River. A
RED KNOT was at Yaquina Bay May 9. The May 9 offshore boat trip noted 350
RED PHALAROPES. On May 4, 30,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and 3000 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES were off Boiler Bay. On May 9 20,000 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and two
MANX SHEARWATERS were seen there. On May 5 ten TUFTED PUFFINS were on
Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach. A BLACK SWIFT was over Astoria May 8. At
least 1000 BROWN PELICANS and a POMARINE JAEGER were seen May 5 at the South
Jetty of the Columbia River.

The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE and two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were at the Troutdale
Airport May 4. A MOCKINGBIRD was there the next day. Four WHIMBREL were at
Ankeny NWR during the week. A GOLDEN EAGLE was there May 4. On May 3 a
SABINE?S GULL, a RED PHALAROPE, and six RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were at the
Philomath Sewage Ponds. A BLACK SWIFT was over Eugene May 9. About 20 BLACK
TERNS are now at Fern Ridge Reservoir.

Malheur NWR is now picking up with a MOCKINGBIRD at the Narrows Store. At
Lake Abert May 5 were 4,135 WILSON?S PHALAROPES and 4,610 EARED GREBES.
Other species there are much reduced from previously.

That?s it for this week.
