We spent 2 days in Leavenworth area rock climbing , hiking and birding.
On sun, we saw a CANYON WREN on the crags just above the icicle creek road.
Also sighted were VIOLET GREEN SWALLOWS, OSPREY, COOPERS HAWK,TURKEY VULTURE, EVENING GROSBEAK,WESTERN TANAGERS, SPOTTED TOWHEES.,YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS, AMERICAN ROBINS.
We stayed overnite at Rock island campground. There we had a nice pair of HARLEQUIN DUCKS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER AND 1 DIPPER.COMMON MERGANSER,SWIFT SP.
On Mon,WOrking our way back the canyon, we saw at Lower Johnny c.g, NASHVILLE ,YELLOW,MACGILLVARYS, AND Y/R WARBLERS, and WARBLING VIREO.
At 8mile c.g, were NASHVILLE. AND MAC WARBLERS,WESTERN TANAGERS, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS.
FArther down canyon were MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES .,RED TALIED HAWK.
A brief stop at the icicle ski trail had WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS ,2 DIPPERS, V/G AND NORTHERN ROUGH WINGED SWALLOWS.
We headed up Mountain Home road. We saw HAIRY WOODPECKER, EV. GROSBEAKS AND CASSINS FINCH in the treed areas. When we got to the one "railroad " area, we saw MOUNTIAN BLUEBIRDS who seemed to have a nest in a big yello earth mover! Also heard a OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHERS. NORTHERN FLICKER flew across the road.
At higher area on the road up to the radio tower , we saw a woodpecker LEWIS's!
Also CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD. and. A HAMMONDS FLYCATCHER.
Although we looked at numerous places for whiteheaded woodpecker where we've previously seen them,not.
I'm the flower dept., the ARROWLEAFED BALSAM ROOTS are at their peak. Also we found some BITTERROOTS blooming on the hillsides.
It's a great time to bird there. As well the bird festival is this weekend.
Most numerous birds were YR WARBLERS, ROBINS , WESTERN TANAGERS and EVE.GROSBEAKS
