The marked Red Knot in one of Ruth Sullivan's photographs was banded and marked on the breeding grounds in northwestern Alaska (in 2010 or 2011). It carries a green flag on the left leg and a geolocator device on the yellow band/tab on the right leg. The yellow flag is visible in the photo; the geolocator is situated on the obscured side of the tab. Researchers in Alaska will attempt to recapture this knot in Alaska and download the information about its migration route contained within the geolocator. Three or 4 of these Alaskan knots have been observed in Washington and another 8-10 in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
