hello everyone,

the handbook of the birds of the world held their international bird
photography competition. if i recall correctly, the winner was awarded
?10,000 (or was it dollars?). anyway, the winner was awarded a large
sum of money. here are the photographs, starting with the winner and
including other equally stunning near-winning images:

personally, i have no clear idea how anyone can choose any one of
these images over another. when i look at them, i not only see (in my
mind's eye) the equipment necessary, but also the technical
difficulties involved with getting the images and the astonishing but
essential amount of luck involved. for these reasons, i think every
image in this collection is a real winner.
