Friday around 5:30 pm I tired for the Whimbrels that Tom Mansfield had found on Caples and Dike Rd. west of Woodland. As soon as I pulled up I could hear them and by the time I got out of the car I could not find them. Other birds observed were Bank Swallows, a female Yellow-headed Blackbird, 4 Bonaparte's Gulls all in breeding plumage, lots of Caspian Terns, and 1 Greater Yellowlegs. Sat. morning I again tried and had non-breeding plumaged Bonaparte's Gulls, Bank Swallows, no Greater Yellowlegs or Whimbrels. At 1:30 pm Sat. stopped by again and 3 Whimbrels were out toward the area the Caspian Terns use for roosting. Sounds like it is good to continually check this mud as one never knows what might be passing through.
