When you go to Lincoln Park and it is gorgeous and
there are very few people and the VERY FIRST bird
that flies into view...is a male Pileated
Woodpecker. A bit high in the tree and it wanted
to hide so only a so-so picture...but I would have
been happy to call it a day after that. But it of
course I did not so I birded very leisurely in the
forested area for about 90 minutes and as I said I
knew it was going to be a good day so when I heard
a bunch of raucous grow I thought "Bet they are
mobbing a Barred Owl". Took a while to locate the
bird which hung tight to the main trunk of the
tree but "Success".

There were many birds singing and I have
re-committed to learning more songs. Birds
included MANY robins, 2 Wilson's and 1 Orange
Crowned Warbler, a dozen or more Dark Eyed Juncoes
and a similar number of Chestnut Backed
Chickadees, Steller's Jay, Song Sparrow, Black
Capped Chickadee, Bushtits, at least 5 Anna's
Hummingbirds, 6 Spotted Towhees, a Hammond's
Flycatcher and 2 unidentified empids, many crows,
5 Red Breasted Nuthatches, some House Sparrows, a
skein of 15+ Canada Geese and nary a swallow or
any more owls or woodpeckers.
