This afternoon and evening my wife and I walked the Snoqualmie Valley trail behind the Stillwater store.? At one point in our walk we heard a beaver slap its tail twice.? We turned back to attempt to see the beaver.? If we had not done this, we would not have seen a female Wood Duck with about 10 young ones which we saw while trying to find an American Bittern that we could hear.? We were able to walk along the trail parallel to the Wood Ducks for awhile until they disappeared into the grass.? Apparently there was a channel of water that we couldn't see.? This left us standing by a dead tree, listening to an American Bittern.? Atop the tree was a Bank Swallow which we observed for quite awhile.? Eventually it flew off and a Downy Woodpecker appeared and disappeared into a hole in the tree.? We watched the Downy Woodpecker come and go a few times.? We never did see an American Bittern, although we heard them all along the trail.? It was after 8
pm so we walked back to our car.? On the way we came upon the Wood Ducks again.
