This is a story worth passing along. It is about a young trumpeter swan in
PA that got tangled in monofilament fishing line and hook. Originally it
was thought this was a mute swan, but birding folks said no, it was a
trumpeter. Photos sent to us confirmed it as a juvenile trumpeter.

You can see the photos at:

Here is the story ending:

I just wanted to share with you an amazing episode that occurred at a state
park in SE Pa over the last week. TTSS involvement started when Marian Quinn
contacted us to ask if the swan in the photo was a mute (as the state
wildlife agency had concluded) or a trumpeter, as the birdwatchers had
concluded. The PA wildlife agency said they would not assist in its rescue
because it was a mute. . I told them it was a yearling trumpeter.

These folks, many of whom had no previous relationship, came together and
formed an amazing team and finally captured and treated the swan (vet and
licensed rehabber) last night before releasing it again. Their ingenuity
and dedication was awesome. Hope this will be the start of much interest in
PA for restoration of trumpeters in the Atlantic Flyway and a chance to
educate a lot more people.
