The numbers of Trumpeter Swans are burgeoning, with 32 including 2 juveniles in the corn stubble at Gate's Field E of Sequim early this morning. It's interesting to watch these large birds among the 5000 or so midgie Cackling Geese. Each time a Bald Eagle appears over the horizon, the Cacklers take off in a great circling, noisy panic, but the swans seem little concerned about predators smaller than they are and they stay put. There are advantages to being the big guys on the block (actually, I think the heaviest wild bird species in North America)!
