Dear Tweeters,
I headed down to scope Sorenson Pond (Berry Rd., Ellensburg, name Tjossem Pond on Google Maps) today (11/17) since it's been pretty productive lately; I wasn't disappointed. There was an adult White-winged Scoter, possibly the same individual I saw there a few weeks back, but now done with molt. Accompanying the Scoter was a single adult female Long-tailed Duck. The Long-tailed Duck was initially spotted sleeping in the grass next to the park bench on the east side of the pond, but later joined the rest of the ducks in the water. The Common Loon that had been present for the past couple of weeks appears to have left, but a lone Western Grebe remains. All of the male Teals I saw were Green-winged, and were in breeding plumage. Other ducks included Mallard, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, American Wigeon and a single Pied-billed Grebe. I'm not sure how deep this pond is, but it sure keeps the divers happy!

Cheers,
Walter Szeliga
