Grace and Ollie Oliver observed for 10 minutes 1 adult female Brown Booby
(Sibley shows that a male Pacific Brown Booby has white on head which this
bird did not have). First observed with a group of Glaucous-winged type
gulls. The gulls were chasing the Booby a lot of the time we viewed the
Booby. At one point an adult Bald Eagle was investigating the booby as it
sat on the water, but the Bald Eagle decided to leave the booby alone as it
was snapping its bill at the eagle and the booby has an impressive bill.
Booby was totally brown above with large yellow bill. There was a clean
dividing line below neck and its lower body was completely white. Tail was
totally brown (upper and lower) and was flared at one point so wedge shape
of the tail was seen. The Brown Booby's wings were thinner than gulls
around it. It was observed plunge diving several times as it fed. Last
seen it was flying West over Kitsap County waters with gulls chasing it.
