The weather was sunny but quite chilly on the Edmonds waterfront this
morning. Of interest was another appearance of a Snowy Owl on the
marina breakwater, just behind our location on the public pier. We
were scanning the Sound, heard a commotion of Crows, and turned around
to see the owl ducking its head as a Crow swooped in low. Another
photographer told us that the owl had been seen from Sunset Avenue and
had then flown in the direction of the marina where we saw it. We were
close enough to see the puffs of its breath when it opened its mouth.
We watched the bird from about 10 to 10:30 a.m.

We also had five alcids this morning. Those included the usual Pigeon
Guillemots, Rhinoceros Auklets, and Common Murres. We watched three
Ancient Murrelets flying to the south and then disappear in a dive. A
little later two Marbled Murrelets flew by. We also had 13 White-
winged Scoters, a few Red-breasted Mergansers, and a couple of
Barrow's Goldeneyes fly by. Other species were those typically seen at
this time of year.
